Introducing ARMA International's GARP® (Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles) and How They Apply to Records Managers
ARMA International has been working to develop standards of record keeping and recently introduced GARP®, eight (8) principles of record keeping. Although GARP® is intended as a framework and not a prescriptive, it was designed as a tool for organizations to use for information management and governance of records creation, organization, security, maintenance and other activities used to effectively support recordkeeping for an organization. ARMA's development of these policies has included legal assistance to relate principles to underlying
ABA Model Rules and other authorities as they apply.
This session will introduce all eight (8) principles with focus on how each apply to your organization, tips on how to assess your compliance, and steps you can take to apply these principles to your records policies.

Social Media and the Records Manager
The use of social media is exploding: Facebook has more than 500 million users, Twitter has more than 175 million users and LinkedIn has in excess of 90 million users. That doesn't include the 1,000+ social media tools in use around the world. Far from being consumer-focused tools that are designed simply to help you keep track of high school friends or to inform the world what you're having for lunch, social media tools are used for real-world business applications. Applications include marketing, building brand loyalty, establishing technical expertise and creating competitive differentiation.
Despite the many benefits of social media, it creates enormous risks in the context of records management, archiving, data loss and overall corporate exposure. Plus, regulators are beginning to take notice and applying traditional rules for email and other electronic content to social media. Any organization, regardless of the industry in which it operates, must address both the risks and benefits of social media.

Electronic Files are Records Too
In this session, Bob Larrivee, Director of North American Education Services for AIIM, will present some recent statistics from the AIIM Industry Watch reports on ERM and discuss how organizations need to recognize that records management practices should embrace and include electronic records as part of their overall records management program. Just as physical records require retention, security and disposition policies the same applies to electronic records. Bob will show how critical this area is, given the current mandates to produce electronic information as part of discovery and the more recent federal mandates that all patient records be made digital with provisions to manage, track and report on their status should a breach of information occur. Bob cites that the first step in all of this should be a realization that records are records regardless of format and they need to be addressed as part of the total records management program.
Why should you attend? Are you still intimidated by electronic records? Have you thought about tackling the management of electronic records but are not sure how to broach the topic with your upper level management? This presentation will not only cover the basics of why we need to be concerned about electronic records but will also introduce you to a panel of records and document management professionals who can share their experiences, both good and bad, with electronic records management.
Bob will also lead a panel of Records Managers on their experiences utilizing both paper and electronic.
Presenter: Bob Larrivee, Presenter - AIIM
Bob Larrivee has over 25 years of experience in the records management and computing industry holding leadership positions in marketing, sales, research and development, product management, and consulting with firms that include Wang, Tech Data, Docubase, BIS Strategic Decisions, Kinetic Information and IMERGE Consulting. As a member of AIIM since 1986, Mr. Larrivee has held the position of Chapter President, Program Chair, Membership Chair, Conference Chair and most recently has been an active member of the EmTAG (Emerging Technologies Advisory Group) and the Education Advisory Committee.

To Scan or Not to Scan - That is the Question
Walk through and be a part of a thorough cost benefit analysis on scanning versus paper storage. Michael Cipriano, President of Millennia Group, a document imaging service provider, will lead an open book analysis of a hypothetical imaging project. He will use industry data and audience input to analyze the project, touching on hardware costs, software costs, storage costs, the elusive efficiency gain and many other inputs. He will build a comprehensive spreadsheet with your help and then walk through all the different variables that can impact your decision to scan. Why should you attend? In this economic climate it is important to be able to provide a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis before beginning any large scale document conversion process. Understanding all the variables can help you decide whether scanning is the best decision for your organization or if your efforts should be concentrated elsewhere.
