As the profession continues to evolve, it is important that RIM professionals keep their skills sharp and relevant. Consider enhancing your skill set by sitting for the Certified Records Manager certification, or working toward an advanced degree in Library and Information Science. RIM professionals looking to enhance their competencies and propel their careers forward can consider the following resources:

Institute of Certified Records Managers

The Institute of Certified Records Managers™ (ICRM) is an international certifying organization of and for professional records and information managers. The ICRM was incorporated in 1975 to create a standard designation or CRM by which persons involved in records and information management could be measured, accredited, and recognized in accord with criteria of experience and knowledge established by their peers. Attaining the CRM designation is based on educational background, professional work experience and successful completion of a six part examination consisting of:

  • Part 1 Management Principles and the Records and Information Management Program
  • Part 2 Records Creation and Use
  • Part 3 Records Systems, Storage and Retrieval
  • Part 4 Records Appraisal, Retention, Protection and Disposition
  • Part 5 Technology, Equipment and Supplies
  • Part 6 Case Studies
