WORKSHOP: GIS – Applying Geospatial Analysis to the Environment

Maps, we see and use them everyday. You may wonder who made the map, how was it made and how did one get all the information to produce the map?  Today, these maps are created in a Geographic Information System ( GIS ).  GIS  is a tool that helps us produce the maps we see every day but also helps us answer question on how people interact with the space around them.  Today's presentation will provide an introduction to GIS and how it is applied at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Carmen Masó has worked for the EPA for the past 14 years as a Geographic Information Systems ( GIS ) Analyst.   During her 14 years as a GIS analyst, she has worked on numerous GIS project including working with our counterparts in Mexico on the US-Mexico Environmental Border Program.

PROGRAM: Window to My Environment and Global Earth Observation System of Systems

Sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnership with federal, state, and local partner organizations, Window to My Environment (WME) is a new website designed to improve access to useful community-based environmental information. WME represents a concerted effort to develop a "geographic portal" for integrating that environmental information by local geography to help answer common questions, examine critical problems, and discover potential solutions for environmental protection and human health issues.

On February 16, 2005 , 61 countries agreed to a plan that, over the next 10 years, will revolutionize the understanding of Earth and how it works. Agreement for a 10-year implementation plan for a Global Earth Observation System of Systems, known as GEOSS, was reached by member countries of the Group on Earth Observations at the Third Observation Summit held in Brussels . The GEOSS project will help all nations involved produce and manage their information in a way that benefits the environment as well as humanity by taking a pulse of the planet.

Tom Brody has worked for the EPA for the past seven years as an Environmental Systems Engineer. His area of interest is applying Geographic Information Systems ( GIS ) and other data integration tools to better understand environmental risk.
