Whether you are now transitioning actively or making a gradual transition to electronic records, few doubt that the use and management of information is in flux. As the next generation of business processes move beyond paper-based records, the greatest challenge for those involved will be managing this transition effectively and to their organization’s best interests. The goal of these sessions is to provide attendees the concepts they need to negotiate this transition professionally and effectively within their organizations.

The central focus will be on Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and the management of electronic content under best management principles and best RIM practices.

Emerging RIM Best Practices in the Legal Environment

In the legal environment, Records and Information Management, RIM Managers face some unique challenges. Those who manage the records within these organizations must not only utilize the basic principles of Records and Information Management but also must be able to handle the unique needs of the firm’s lawyers and clients.
With the growing demand to control critical information, what Records and Information Management best practices are emerging in the legal field?

Topics to include
• Building a Best Practices RIM Program/ A Case Study - How a program was built from scratch with a best practices approach
• RIM Policies and IT – Effectively connecting with your IT department to discuss RIM policy
• Matter Centric Records Management – Managing email and other electronic records in a matter centric workspace
• The Future of RIM in the Legal Environment – A roundtable of individuals from the RIM and IT fields will address prepared topics and take questions from the audience.

Presenters

David O. Stephens, CRM, FAI
David Stephens is an internationally recognized authority in records and information management. He has served since 1995 as vice president for records management consulting at Zasio Enterprises, Inc., a leading records management company. Bringing his thirty years of experience, David has developed or improved records management programs for more than two hundred corporations and government agencies across the United States. David Stephens is also one of the most prolific speakers and authors in contemporary records management. His most recent book is Records Management: Making the Transition from Paper to Electronic (ARMA International publication).

David has also co-authored the book Electronic Records Retention: New Strategies for Data Life Cycle Management, published in 2003, the standard reference work on the subject. As a speaker he has addressed thousands of records managers throughout the United States and in some twenty countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America and the South Pacific. Information Management, ARMA International’s journal, features his articles frequently. As an instructor he has for many years lectured for the basic and advanced records management curriculum offered by The George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

David has also served as ARMA International president and in 1992 became a ARMA International Company of Fellows.


Beth Chiaiese, CRM, MLIS

Beth Chiaiese has been the National Director of Loss Prevention at Foley & Lardner LLP since 2001. Her twenty nine years of records management professional practice include experience as a practitioner as well as a consultant. She has assisted firms in developing work processes and technological strategies reflecting best practices in the areas of records management, conflicts of interest, new business processing and risk management.

Beth Chiaiese speaks frequently to professional audiences. Her appearances before national conferences include those of the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA), the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA International), the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Attorneys’ Liability Assurance Society (ALAS). She is currently a member of ARMA International’s Board of Directors.

Ms. Chiaiese’s articles have appeared in the National Law Journal, LawNet, and in ARMA International publications. She is co-author of Records Management in the Legal Environment, published by ARMA International in 2003 that discusses extensively the processes, technologies and ethical concerns law firm records and conflicts managers and administrators face.


Ann Ostrander
Ann Ostrander currently directs the global loss prevention efforts at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Her experiences prior to joining Kirkland include a six-year stint as a technology consultant focusing on records management, conflicts and automated workflow issues (including business analysis, software selection, data conversion and project management), another six-year stint directing the operations of a large New York firm and a few two-year stints helping law firms convert from paper to electronic information systems. Ann is also a Records Management Steering Committee member for ILTA.
